You went Chinese on a bakkie — which raised a few eyebrows. But the P-Series specs speak for themselves. What you need now is an insurer who agrees.

Insurance covers accidents and theft. An extended warranty covers engine, gearbox, and drivetrain failures beyond your manufacturer warranty. For a working bakkie, mechanical cover is as important as accident cover.
You went Chinese on a bakkie — and yes, a few people raised an eyebrow. But you looked at the P-Series specs, the price, the warranty, and the tow rating, and it made sense. What you need now is an insurer who's comfortable underwriting it, and a premium that reflects its value rather than a brand prejudice.
The honest reality: the P-Series is newer to the SA bakkie market than the Hilux, Ranger, or D-Max. Insurer theft-frequency data for it is still building, and some insurers will price conservatively as a result. Others won't. The variation in quotes can be significant — R200 to R400 per month on the same P300 from different insurers is not unusual.
P300 — the higher-volume seller. Lower retail price means a lower premium. The 2x4 base model is the most affordable P-Series to insure by a meaningful margin.
P500 — higher spec, higher retail price, higher trade value. The 4x4 drivetrain adds repair cost exposure. Expect premiums 30–50% higher than the P300 2x4 on the same insurer.
The Hilux and Ranger are among SA's most stolen vehicles. The P-Series is not yet in the top theft frequency lists — which is a double-edged sword. Your P-Series is currently less of a target than a Hilux, but some insurers don't yet have enough claims data to price it confidently. Over time, as more P-Series bakkies are on SA roads, pricing will settle. Right now, comparing quotes matters more than on a mainstream bakkie.
