Insurance covers accidents and theft. An extended warranty covers engine, gearbox, and electrical failures when your manufacturer warranty expires. Get both and you're fully covered.
The Toyota Hilux has ranked as either the most or second-most stolen vehicle in South Africa for over a decade. SAPS vehicle crime statistics confirm this year after year. The combination of high resale value, strong parts demand, and widespread use makes it a primary target for organised vehicle crime syndicates operating across all nine provinces.
Insurers price this theft risk aggressively. A new 2.8 GD-6 Legend retails for over R900,000 — and Toyota-specific parts and labour add significantly to the average claim cost.
2.8 GD-6 4x4 — flagship variant, highest retail value, highest theft risk, highest premium. GR-S and Legend top-spec sit at the top of the range.
2.8 GD-6 4x2 — meaningfully cheaper than the 4x4. Worth considering for buyers who do not need 4x4 capability.
2.4 GD-6 — most common working Hilux. Lower value, lower premium, but theft risk remains elevated.
2.0 VVTi single cab — lowest value, simplest construction, most affordable to insure.
If your Hilux is used for business travel, farming, or trade work, it must be insured for business use. A personal policy that excludes business use can void a claim entirely. If your Hilux is genuinely private use only, specify this clearly — it can save R200–R500/month.
An approved tracking device is the single most impactful action for a Hilux owner. Tracker and Netstar are most widely accepted. Some insurers require a tracking device as a mandatory condition of cover. The monthly tracking fee of R150–R300 is invariably less than the premium reduction it generates.
Beyond tracking, comparing at every renewal is non-negotiable. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive insurer for the same Hilux can exceed R700/month — R8,400 per year simply by not shopping around.
