Naked Insurance launched in 2018 as SA's first fully app-based insurer. The model is structurally different from every traditional insurer: Naked takes a fixed fee from your premium — covering their operating costs and a modest profit margin. The rest goes into a claims pool. At year end, whatever is left in that pool after paying claims is donated to a charity you choose.
This matters because it removes the traditional insurer's incentive to avoid paying claims. In a traditional model, every rand they don't pay you is a rand of profit. In Naked's model, unpaid claims just go to charity — not to their bottom line. In theory, this makes them more likely to pay fairly. In practice, their Hellopeter reviews bear this out better than most established SA brands.
Going on holiday and leaving your car at home? Working remotely for a month? CoverPause lets you pause your accident cover (while keeping theft and fire cover active) and pay a reduced premium during that period. You activate it in the app. It takes two minutes. No other SA insurer offers this.
Naked is entirely app-based. Quoting, cover activation, amendments, and claims all happen through the app. There's no broker, no call centre, and no branch. For most straightforward claims — accidents, theft — this works well. For complex or disputed claims, you'll be managing it through the app and their support team, without a broker intermediary in your corner.
Naked isn't on our panel — they don't participate in comparison services. Get a direct quote at naked.insure and compare it against what our six-insurer panel quotes for your vehicle. Then you'll know.
