How Much Does Car Insurance Cost in South Africa?

Most South Africans pay between R800 and R1,400 per month for comprehensive car insurance on a mid-range vehicle. Third-party fire and theft policies start from around R400–R700/month, and third-party only cover can be as low as R200–R350/month.

The exact figure depends heavily on your individual risk profile. Two people insuring the same vehicle can receive premiums that differ by R500/month or more based on their age, address, claims history, and the insurer they choose.

Car insurance costs by cover type

Cover typeWhat it coversTypical monthly cost

Third-party fire & theftFire, theft of your vehicle + 3rd partyR400 — R700

These ranges are for a mid-range vehicle (R200,000–R350,000 trade value) with a low-to-medium risk driver profile. High-value vehicles, younger drivers, or policyholders in high-theft areas will see higher premiums.

What factors affect your car insurance premium?

Vehicle value and model

The single biggest driver of your premium is the insured value of the vehicle. A Toyota Hilux at R520,000 costs more to insure than a Polo Vivo at R145,000 — simply because the insurer's potential payout is larger. Theft risk by model also matters significantly: the Hilux and Polo Vivo are both disproportionately targeted by thieves, which adds a loading above what their retail values alone would suggest.

Your age and claims history

Younger drivers — particularly under 25 — pay materially higher premiums than older, experienced drivers. A 22-year-old insuring the same Polo as a 40-year-old with a clean record can face a premium 40–80% higher. Every claim in the past three to five years also adds to your risk score.

Where you live

Your home address is one of the most significant premium variables. Gauteng and the Western Cape consistently produce higher premiums than smaller provinces due to higher accident frequency, theft rates, and repair demand. Within provinces, suburb-level theft and accident data feeds directly into pricing models.

Cover level and excess

A higher voluntary car insurance excess — the amount you agree to pay in the event of a claim — directly lowers your monthly premium. Choosing a R5,000 voluntary excess over a R2,500 excess can save R100–R300/month depending on the vehicle and insurer. The trade-off is cash-flow risk: you need to have that excess available at claim time.

Which SA insurers are cheapest?

There is no single cheapest insurer — every insurer's pricing model produces different results for different risk profiles. Multiple insurers on our panel have shown competitive data points for standard risk profiles. Off-panel, Pineapple and Momentum Insure have also been competitive in our dataset.

The only reliable way to find the cheapest rate for your specific vehicle and profile is to compare quotes. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive insurer for the same vehicle and driver can exceed R700/month — R8,400/year.

How to reduce your car insurance premium

  • Compare at every renewal — never accept automatic renewal pricing without checking the market
  • Install a tracking device — reduces theft loading significantly, especially on high-risk models
  • Increase your voluntary excess — if you have cash available, a higher excess lowers your monthly cost
  • Specify private use only — if you don't use your car for business, declare it correctly
  • Park securely overnight — off-street or garage parking reduces theft loading
  • Consider named drivers — restricting cover to one or two named drivers reduces the risk pool
  • Low-mileage drivers can explore pay-as-you-drive insurance — per-km pricing can save R300–R500/month for drivers covering under 1,000 km/month
