There is no single cheapest car insurer in South Africa. Every insurer's pricing model produces different results for different driver profiles, vehicles, and locations. A driver who gets the best price from King Price may find Budget Insurance cheaper — or vice versa — based purely on how each insurer's risk model scores their specific profile.
That said, our pricing data does show consistent patterns. Here is what the numbers say.
Insurer pricing comparison: what our data shows
Based on 38 data points collected from insurer adverts and direct quotes on standard SA vehicles with low-risk driver profiles:
| Insurer | Est. mean rate (% of trade value/month) | Data points |
|---|---|---|
| Pineapple | ~0.17% | 5 |
| King Price | ~0.22% | 3 |
| Momentum Insure | ~0.26% | 9 |
| Budget Insurance | ~0.32% (assumed) | — |
| Dial Direct | ~0.33% | 1 |
| Auto & General | ~0.35% (assumed) | — |
| iWyze | ~0.36% | 8 |
| OUTsurance | ~0.44% | 8 |
| Prime Meridian | ~0.64% | 4 |
These figures are based on a limited dataset and should be treated as directional rather than definitive. Your actual rate will depend on your specific risk profile.
King Price's decreasing premium model
King Price's unique decreasing premium model — where your monthly premium falls as your vehicle depreciates — means that over the life of a policy, the total paid can be lower than a flat-premium insurer even if the initial premium is similar. This model makes most sense on newer, higher-value vehicles where depreciation is fastest.
The Telesure group: four brands, one risk engine
Budget Insurance, Dial Direct, Auto & General, and First For Women all use the same underlying risk engine. All four brands share the same claims infrastructure; cover terms and product positioning are where they differ. If you receive a quote from one Telesure brand, the others will be closely related.
Off-panel: Pineapple and Naked are worth checking
Pineapple has the lowest mean rate in our dataset at approximately 0.17% of trade value per month. Naked Insurance, while not in our rate dataset, has a strong reputation for competitive pricing among digital-native drivers. Neither is on our quote panel, but getting a direct quote from both and comparing against our panel outputs is a worthwhile 10 minutes of work.
The right way to find the cheapest rate
Comparing quotes is the only reliable method. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive insurer for the same South African driver and vehicle can exceed R700/month — R8,400/year. The insurer that was cheapest for you two years ago may not be the cheapest today, as insurers reprice their books annually.
Compare at every renewal without exception. The five minutes it takes to get comparison quotes is the highest-return five minutes available to most South African car owners.
