Naked Insurance launched in South Africa in 2018 as the country's first fully digital insurer. Built mobile-first, Naked lets you get a quote, activate cover, and submit a claim entirely through its app — without speaking to a human if you don't want to. It is underwritten by Hollard and backed by institutional investors including International Finance Corporation.
You can get a quote directly from Naked at naked.insure.
Naked operates on a transparent fee basis: it takes a fixed percentage of your premium to cover operating costs and profit. The remainder is held in a claims pool. At year-end, any surplus in the claims pool that wasn't used for claims is donated to a charity of the policyholder's choosing — rather than retained as insurer profit. This structure is designed to remove the conflict of interest between paying claims and generating profit that exists in traditional insurance models.
Naked also offers CoverPause: if you are parking your car for an extended period, you can pause accident cover (keeping theft and fire cover active) and pay a reduced premium for that period. This is unique in the SA market.
Naked is best suited to drivers who are comfortable managing insurance entirely through an app, value transparency in how their premiums are used, and are attracted to the no-frills digital model. Its pricing is competitive for lower-risk profiles and newer vehicles.
